WEEK 8: Portland Thorns vs Chicago Red Stars 6/1/13

Zakiya Bywaters team photo

1st round draft pick Zakiya Bywaters scored her 2nd goal of the season WITH HER HEAD, clinching 3-points for the Chicago Red Stars.  This was their first win, and all the better since it was against now the former #1 team, the Portland Thorns.  Along with their two new German National Team additions, this win should give the Stars some much needed confidence moving forward!  One of the more entertaining aspects of the game was watching Zakiya Bywaters and Jazmine Avant go at it on both ends of the field, both very aggressive, but Bywaters did get the better Avant this time around.

On another note, I was glad to see Nikki Washington back.  No conspiracy after all, Washington had been out previously due to a knee injury. Evidently, the Thorns are very secretive when it comes to injuries, i.e. they don’t want to giveaway any strategic advantages to the other teams.

One more thing.  You gotta love Shannon Boxx.  She’s out recovering from surgery, but she’s watching and rooting for her girls all the way – you can feel her emotion through her tweets…

Great goal by @chicagoredstars. Started w/ a great cross from Lydia, Michelle rising above her defender & bywaters finishing it off. Love it

Gotta love my teammates. Ella carrying bywaters off. I hope Z is alright. #nomotekneeproblems

I just screamed out loud for Jackie. Love the quick restart and great job by Jackie on the back post. 2-0 @chicagoredstars

Good first half for @chicagoredstars. Need to come back out 2nd half how we finished the first half. #playingwithconfidence

Go Redstars so happy for my girls. Have stayed positive through the rough times and came out on top w a huge win. Enjoy ur victory #hashtag
