The Final WWC 2011 Awards

I’m sure the members of the US WNT who received WWC awards would prefer a World Cup medal over an individual medal, or being named to the All-Star Team, and for Abby Wambach and Hope Solo it seemed to take every muscle in their body to hold their individual trophies when presented them immediately after their loss to Japan.   However, they should be proud of their individual achievements.

Below is a complete list of the award winners.

adidas Golden Ball for best player:  Homare Sawa (Japan)  

adidas Silver Ball for 2nd best player of the tourney:  Abby Wambach (USA)  

adidas Bronze Ball for 3rd best player of the tourney:  Hope Solo (USA)  

adidas Golden Boot for most goals in the tourney:  Homare Sawa (five goals, one assist)

adidas Silver Boot for 2nd most goals in the tourney:  Marta (four goals, two assists)

adidas Bronze Boot for 3rd most goals in the tourney: Abby Wambach (four goals, one assist)

adidas Golden Glove for best goalie in the tourney:  Hope Solo  

Hyundai Best Young Player: Caitlin Foord (Australia)  

FIFA Fair Play Award: Japan

All-star team:
 21 players were named in the All-star team.  4 from the USA WNT.

Goalkeepers: Ayumi Kaihori (JPN) and Hope Solo.  Defenders: Alex Scott (ENG), Laura Georges (FRA), Erika (BRA), Saskia Bartusiak (GER), Sonia Bompastor (FRA) and Elise Kellond-Knight (AUS). Defensive midfield: Shannon Boxx, Homare Sawa (JPN), Caroline Seger (SWE) and Jill Scott (ENG). Attacking midfield: Kerstin Garefrekes (GER), Shinobu Ohno (JPN), Louisa Necib (FRA), Anonman (EQG), Aya Miyama (JPN) and Lauren Cheney (USA), Forwards: Lotta Schelin (SWE), Marta (BRA) and Abby Wambach.
